The first track, Footprints in the Clouds, is a song celebrating all the lovers with their heads in the clouds.

The second track, The Roof, is an explosive war song that says farewell to arms, legs, and heads. But it is also about godlike carefree kids playing in the street.

The last track, No Goal, is a contemplative song about the human condition. Is aimlessness a loss of character, or is it the whole life experience? What are we even doing on our hind legs?

The first track, The Stars, recycles the classic Black Metal slogan “Fuck the world!” now repackaged in a somewhat experimental pop song. The song expresses a state of mind and life beyond the dichotomy of the stereotypical (and endlessly repeated) “success stories” in pop culture - material success versus good old morality.
The second track, One Direction, explores aimlessness, presenting it not as a lack of purpose but as a purposeful way of living.
The last track, The Dreaming Lion, is a love song about returning to sleep.

In 2017, I picked each song from the album “Fritt efter en väg” and sent it to different musicians and producers, mainly based in Stockholm, and asked them if they wanted to do a remix, and to my surprise and glee, they all said yes (that’s 100% yeses!). Even better, they also sent wonderful interpretations of the original songs in return. As a result, the whole original album has been recreated song by song.

But there is a twist. The original album “Fritt efter en väg” was a musical interpretation of the six tableaux found in “The Heavenly Play” written by Rune Lindström, a local hero in Leksand, Sweden. His stage play depicts a journey in which the protagonist, Mats, leaves his village after his fiancée is sentenced to death by burning and travels through a weird landscape where reality and fantasy merge. On the album, we, Strulgattu & Meierkord, explored these spatial and temporal coordinates of human activity, trying to translate the paintings to music. As a result, extraterrestrial and cosmic sounds were blended with earthy and organic ones.

The remixes on this album, however, are detached from the story found in “The Heavenly Play”. Rather, they are interpretations of the original interpretation. In my opinion, these remixes all fit together in a strange way, like the songs were supposed to be “album songs” rather than “singles” from the beginning. Surely, it is not a Pink Floyd album, but I believe this is an album that works best when listened to from start to finish, which is pretty impressive considering it is a remix album.

I am thankful for having the opportunity to collaborate with these gifted people and their beautiful and haunting soundscapes; music that evokes worlds of hope and melancholy; mental places where I want to remain and grow old.

Patrick Richard

Patrick Richard was introduced to and immediately seduced by the early techno and house club scene in Stockholm in the late 1980s. In the early 1990s, he went on to organise clubs in Stockholm and also started producing music and DJing around the City. Debuted as a producer on Jef K’s respected Silver Network imprint in 2002 and has since been behind a row of releases and remixes, found on labels such as Moodmusic, Route 33, Tangent Beats, New Speak, and Deep Departures. He has also appeared on releases as a member of The Policy Unit, Sonik,o and PROB. Since 2012, he has run the ROMB label, which focuses on releasing new and established artists from the Stockholm area.

Pawel Kobak

Started as a musician, club promoter, and DJ in Stockholm, Sweden, in the early 1990s. Lived in Paris, London, and Barcelona, DJing, producing, and promoting Swedish house music and artists. Oldschool DJ and producer of Deep, Soulful, and Tech House. Released first record in 1995 and has since then released music on i! Rec, Romb, Oh!, Lace, Metamorphic, Deeplay, Tricircle, Manuscript Records, etc. Founder of twice Grammy-nominated house label Route33.

The “dala paintings” are famous for their richly decorated floral motifs. However, another distinctive feature is the mixture of biblical motifs and the everyday life the painters saw (we’re talking about rural Sweden in the 18th and 19th centuries here). From this outlook on life, Jerusalem becomes the provincial capital of Dalarna, Falun. The biblical prophets are looking into the future, sitting on a mountain farm in rural Sweden. This peculiar confusion of imagination and reality has inspired the group Strulgattu, which blends extraterrestrial and cosmic sounds with earthy and organic ones.

In Strulgattu’s interpretation of the play, the dark backdrop is also highlighted: the witch trials in Sweden that began and ended in the band’s home county, Dalarna, about 250 years ago.
